Rebecca
Weatherford
Fredericksburg Glass Artist
A beginning stained glass course at a small community college in 1976
accentuated Rebecca’s lifelong love of art glass. Glass fusing began in
1998 with the purchase of a used ceramic kiln at a moving sale. Fusing
became her passion. Glass that is specifically made to melt together at
temperatures of up to 1700º F is used. The artist repeatedly heats,
cools, cuts, layers, and re-melts the glass to produce incredible pieces
of art glass. Constant experimenting, including the addition of mica,
enamels, wire, and precious metal leaf, allows this artist to develop
her expertise. The artistic techniques of etching, sandblasting, and
enameling may also be integrated into the design. Fusing small grains of
glass called “frit” to shade and give an object dimension is Rebecca’s
forte. Every stage in the process is equally important because even the
smallest mistake can cause a fatal flaw.
A native Texan, Rebecca was born in San Angelo where she lived until her
college years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech
University and a Master of Education degree from the University of
Houston. Before the birth of her two children, Rebecca taught English
and high school math and worked as a high school guidance counselor. In
2001, the Weatherford’s settled in the lovely Hill Country of
Fredericksburg, Texas.
“Glass fusing is exciting because this complex process is challenging.
The process requires not only artistic ability but also technical
precision to execute. Glass fusing is as fascinating as it is
beautiful,” says Rebecca. She adds, “I hope that you will enjoy this
unique fused art glass as much as I enjoy creating it.”
Rebecca’s glass art is shown at the Fredericksburg Art Gallery at 314 E.
Main St. in Fredericksburg, Texas.
